The Food for Work Programme was introduced in 1970 and incorporated as the National Rural Employment Programme in the Sixth Plan. It started back in April 1977.
1)      The idea of the program was to provide additional resources so that the epoch of supplementary wages employ and provide food security.
2)      It was renamed in November 2004 as the National Food for work program.
3)      This program was subsumed with the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act(NREGA) in February 2006.
4)      The program is open to all hidden poor who are prepared to do manual unskilled labour work and are in the need of wage employment. It is implemented as a centrally-sponsored scheme.
