The Food for Work Programme was initiated in 1970. It was incorporated as the National Rural Employment Programme in the Sixth Plan. It started back in April 1977.
The program's objective was to provide additional resources to generate supplementary employment wages and food security.
It was renamed in November 2004 as the National Food for work program.
This program was subsumed with the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act(NREGA) in February 2006.
