Detailed Solution

The food grains produced by India today are over 200 million tonnes, compared to the 50 million tonnes produced in 1950.
1)      India now generates more than 200 million tonnes of agricultural grains, up from just 50 million tonnes in 1950.
2)      This significant rise can be attributed to the following increase in production. Over the past two decades, the total number of food grains purchased by government entities increased rapidly, attributed to emerging technologies and the Green Revolution that introduced fertilisers into production. This helps the public distribution system fulfil its obligations and builds a buffer stock to guarantee the country's food security.
3)      Every year, about 15 per cent of India's rice harvest and about 20 per cent of its wheat production are purchased from states like Punjab and Haryana by FCI to create buffer stock.
