According to Newton's law of gravity, everybody in the universe attracts every other body with a force that is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centres. The gravitational pull exerted on an item by the earth is always directed towards the earth's centre.

When a cricket ball is tossed upwards, gravity will try to draw it into the earth's centre, which means the gravitational force will work in the opposite direction of the ball's velocity.
