The Forest Act means extreme hardship for villagers across the country. In forested places, people use items like roots, leaves, fruits, and tubers among other things for a variety of purposes. Fruits and tubers are nutrient-rich foods, while wood is used for agricultural tools and herbs are used as medicines. For communities all around the nation, the Forest Act entailed extreme hardship. Following the Act, all of their regular activities—including gathering fruit and rhizomes, grazing their cattle, building their homes with wood, hunting, and fishing—became prohibited. Now, people were compelled to steal wood from the forests, and if they got caught, they were at the mercy of the forest guards, who would accept bribes from them. Women who gathered gasoline were particularly concerned. It was also typical practice for forest guards and police constables to harry people by requesting free meals from them.
