The Forest Act of 1878 has divided the forest into three categories. The forest act of 1865 was amended in the year 1878. The forests were separated into three groups by the 1878 amendment: reserved, protected, and village forests.
1)      Reserved Forest: These forests were regarded as the best kind of forests that were under government control. These forests provided timber for commercial purposes. The common people were not allowed to enter these forests for extracting forest produce.
2)      Protected Forest: They were partially under government control. Villagers were allowed to extract minor produce from these forests.
3)      Village Forests: These forests were under village authorities. The villagers could extract wood for building purposes and fuel.
