Detailed Solution

Potassium permanganate, KMnO4 is soluble in water and consists of two ions: a permanganate ion (MnO4-) and a potassium ion (K+).

In its physical state, it is a dark purple odourless solid. When potassium permanganate crystals are dissolved in water, the resulting solution is purple. It is considered a strong oxidizing agent and does not produce toxic by-products. It is usually prepared from manganese oxide by mixing a solution of KOH with oxidizing agents like potassium chlorate.

6KOH+3MnO2+6KClO33K2MnO4+6KCl+3H2O

This forms the potassium manganate (green) that is boiled with a large quantity of water. Then, current of chlorine, CO2 , and ozonized air is passed through the liquid until manganate is converted into permanganate.

6K2MnO4 + 3Cl2  6KMnO4 Potassium Permanganate+ 6KCl

Hence, option 2 is the correct option.
