The Dutch erected the fort at Masulipatnam. From the 16th century on, European businessmen settled in Masulipatnam, and in the 17th century, the Portuguese, British, Dutch, and French used it as a major trading port. Masulipatnam evolved into the most significant port on the Andhra coast, and both the Dutch and English East India Companies made attempts to take control of it. Many groups tried to gain an upper hand in the trade of this town. However, the harbour city had declined by the end of the 17th century. During this time, Golkonda was conquered by the Mughals.
