Detailed Solution

The Fort of Bastille was a symbol of Despotic monarchy.
The Bastille, a medieval fortress east of Paris, during the 17th and 18th centuries became France's state prison and the house of people accused of various crimes. The Bastille, which was attacked by an armed mob in Paris at the beginning of the French Revolution, is a symbol of the autocracy of the ruling Bourbon monarchy and is prominent in the ideology of the Revolution. With eight towers 100 feet (30 meters) high, connected by walls of equal height, and surrounded by a moat more than 80 feet (24 meters) wide, the Bastille dominates Paris. The first stone was laid on April 22, 1370, by order of Charles V of France, who built it as a bastide, or fortress, for protection. The Bastille was originally a fortified gate, but Charles VI turned it into an independent stronghold by filling in holes.
