Chandragupta laid the groundwork for the Mauryan Empire. It is generally assumed that Chandragupta was an orphaned youngster raised by Chanakya or Kautilya. The book, Arthashastra, contains many of Chanakya's ideas, which later helped Chandragupta to rule the area. They built their own mercenary army. They then made their way into Magadha to the east. Around 321 BC, Chandragupta conquered Dhana Nanda in a series of conflicts, laying the cornerstone for the Maurya Empire.
