The Frankfurt parliament gathered at St. Paul's Church on May 18, 1848. The parliament was elected through a popular vote. In Frankfurt, various political groups of middle-class professionals, businesses, and rich artisans convened. The German National Assembly as a whole came up with the notion. The German Constitution was written with the king as subordinate to the parliament in mind. However, Friedrich Wilhelm IV, King of Prussia, rejected it. He banded up with the other monarchs to oppose the elected assembly. Conflicts of interest between the middle class and the working class, notably artisans, weakened parliament's social foundation. Finally, the parliament was forced to dissolve.
