Detailed Solution

The French population went up from 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1798.
From around 23 million people in 1715 to 28 million in 1789, the population of France increased. As a result, demand for food grains rose quickly. Grain production could not match up with demand. Therefore, bread, a staple of the majority's diet, saw a sharp price increase. Most people found work as labourers in workshops where owners set their wages. However, earnings did not increase at the same rate that prices did. So, the wealth gap between the rich and the poor grew more. Every time a drought or hail diminished the harvest, things became worse. This caused a subsistence crisis, common throughout France's Old Regime.
