The French Revolution occurred during the reign of the king Louis XVI.
The French Revolution began in 1789 and lasted until 1794. On July 14, 1789, crowds in Paris, hungry for food due to failed crops, annoyed with their living conditions and the king and their government, stormed the fortress Bastille (a prison). In October 1789, King Louis XVI and his family were moved from Versailles (royal palace) to Paris. He attempted to flee in 1791 but was captured and compelled to accept a novel style of government easily. The "legislative assembly" was run from October 1791 to September 1792, later replaced by the "National Convention". France was proclaimed a Republic, and shortly the king was claimed to be powerless. The revolution became more and more radical and violent. Louis XVI was executed on January 21, 1793. Over the next six weeks, some 1,400 people considered potential enemies of the Republic were executed in Paris.
