Detailed Solution

The French society was divided into three classes when the Revolution broke out in 1789.
The three estates were different classes in France at the time of the revolution, each representing a particular segment of society. The first establishment was the clergy; the second estate,  nobility, and the third estate, the commoner. We are in 1789,  French King Louis XVI has been on the throne for 15 years. The heavy costs of war, both in Europe and the Americas,  led to unpopular tax increases; low agricultural production means that food prices rise faster than wages; add to that a combination of a rapidly growing population and high unemployment.  The hardships of life for many people have lessened and inequality in society has become severe. This led to resentment against Louis XVI. The long-held view that the monarchy should be absolutized has rapidly diminished. These are just some of the causes that fanned the flames of the French Revolution and they have been debated by many historians.
