The main occupation of Dhangars was buffalo herding. The Gavali or Dhangars are found in the coastal strip of India and practice cattle/buffalo herding and shifting cultivation. They also weave blankets. Dhangars move to the Konkan region during monsoon because Maharashtra is a semi-arid region with low rainfall and poor soil, and the land gets converted into thorny scrub. They are natives of Maharashtra but also found in Karnataka, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. They are referred to as Gavali in southern Maharashtra and Ahir in northern Uttar Pradesh.
