Detailed Solution

The French society was divided into three estates before the revolution of 1789. Before the French Revolution, there were three estates in French society. From the early Middle Ages through the Early Modern Era, these were the socioeconomic strata in Christian Europe. The clergy made up the first estate, followed by the nobility and the general populace as the second and third estates. The mediaeval Church restricted social mobility to a certain extent.
