The Ganga water is able to dilute and assimilate pollution loads within a 20 Km radius. It covers almost the entire northern region. The nearby agricultural and industrial areas have polluted the river to such an extent that the colour of the water changed. The Ganga Action Plan, set up in 1986, acts to counter the pollution of the river Ganga, which is considered sacred. It is believed that the Ganga water would dilute and assimilate pollution loads within a 20 km radius. All efforts are made by the Government and the National Ganga River Basin Authority to protect the river.
