Detailed Solution

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) belongs to the retrovirus family of viruses. It is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome). Within the core of the virus particle is located the HIV genome which is made up of two identical single-stranded RNA molecules.

RNA genome of the virus replicates to form viral DNA with the help of the enzyme reverse transcriptase. This viral DNA gets incorporated into host cell’s DNA and directs the infected cells to produce virus particles.
