The German National Assembly met at Weimer and established a democratic constitution.
The new constitution, which the Weimar National Assembly drafted, was in effect from 1919 to 1933 and officially remained in force until the end of the Nazi administration in 1945. The Weimar Republic is the term given to this period of German history because it was assembled in Weimar, Thuringia. A democratic constitution with a federal setup was hence formed. Elections for the Reichstag were based on proportional representation, and all men and women over 20 were eligible to vote. In addition, provisions for referendums and well-supported legislative initiatives were developed. For the first time in German history, it offered a solid basis for the growth of democracy.
