The Gollas of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh lived near the woods where they cultivated small patches of land. They mostly lived on the outskirts of the woods. Apart from herding cattle, they cultivated small pieces of land and engaged in small trade, like selling dairy products or supplying towns with forest firewood. Their seasonal movement for pastures depended on monsoons and dry seasons. For the dry season, they lived in the coastal areas; but with the coming of the monsoon season, they had to move to the interior parts of the country, i.e., to the dry central plateau, because the herds disliked the swampy, wet conditions of the coastal tracts.
