A Multinational Corporation brought these rights from the government for the city of Cochabamba. The cost of water was instantly hiked four times by the corporation. In Bolivia, where the average monthly income was about Rs. 5000, many people received water bills worth Rs. 1000. This resulted in a public outcry. The MNC officials were compelled to leave the city, and the government was compelled to grant all of the protestors' demands. After the MNC contract expired, the municipality's water service was reinstated at the earlier prices.
