The Governor-General who introduced the policy of ‘paramountcy’ was Lord Hastings. The British claimed that its rule was supreme and that its power was more substantial than that of Indian states. It had the right to annex or threaten to acquire any Indian kingdom to defend its interests. This approach influenced later British policies as well. A minor state called Kitoor contested this approach but was defeated by the British.
