The Gujjar Bakarwals belong to Jammu and Kashmir. Many of the Gujjar Bakarwals migrated to Jammu and Kashmir around the nineteenth century, searching for pastures for their animals. During the winter, when the mountains are enveloped by snow, they reside in the low hills of the Siwalik range, dotted with dry scrub forests, with their herds. Then, towards the end of April, they begin trekking up the mountain for their summer grazing grounds. Several households participate in this journey by forming a kafila.
