The Habsburg empire ruled over Austria and Hungary. The Habsburg Empire was a mixture of different regions and people as the empire that ruled Austria-Hungary included the Alpine regions like Tyrol, Austria, Bohemia, and the Sudetenland, Bohemia had a German-speaking aristocracy. Italian-speaking provinces of Lombardy and Venetia were also included in the Empire. Half of the population in Hungary spoke Magyar while the other half spoke a variety of dialects, the aristocracy in Galicia spoke Polish. Other than these dominant groups, a mass of subject peasant people, Bohemians, and Slovaks in the north, Slovenes in Carniola, Roumansin the east, and Croats in the south, also resided in the empire.
