The highest growth rate in food production was achieved in Punjab and Haryana. India has been aiming at self-sufficiency in food grains since its independence. India adopted a new strategy called ‘The Green Revolution, especially in producing wheat and rice.  Punjab and Haryana experienced the fastest rate of development, with foodgrain production rising from 7.23 million tonnes in 1964–1965 to an all-time high of 30.33 million tonnes in 1995–1996. Production in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and the northeastern states continued to stagger.
