Pahari painting is a form of book illustration and miniature painting that originated in the sovereign republics of the Indian Himalayan foothills. The powerful, intense Basohli school and the delicate, lyrical Kangra school make up the style, characterized by two stark contrasts. Pahari painting is strongly tied to Rajasthani painting in conception and sentiment. The Rajput art of the North Indian plains and Pahari painting—called Hill painting—share a fondness for depicting Krishna legends. The first documented paintings in the hills, which date to around 1690, use the Basohli vernacular, which remained in various centers until roughly the middle of the 18th century. It was replaced by a transitional fashion from roughly 1740 to 1775 and was often referred to as pre-Kangra.
