The Hindu College was established in the year 1791.
A Hindu college was founded in Benares in 1791 to promote the study of classical Sanskrit scriptures for the benefit of the nation's government. William Jones and several other Britishers were interested in the ancient Indian scriptures and traditions. They wanted to create an atmosphere that was encouraging of these writings. They thought that by doing this, the British would learn more about Indian culture, Indians would be inspired to rediscover their roots and treasure their former glory, and the British would take control of and maintain Indian culture.
