Detailed Solution

The Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act was passed in 1856. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar suggested widows should remarry through ancient literature. In 1856, a law was passed that made widow remarriage acceptable. More areas of the country started to adopt the widow remarriage trend by the second part of the nineteenth century. Even though widow remarriage was fiercely opposed and viewed as a gross violation of Hindu customs, the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856, was adopted. The law was completed personally by Lord Dalhousie. The Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act was enacted on July 16, 1856, legalising the custom. This act also provided for all the rights and inheritances they had at the time of their first marriage.
