Based on sulfonamide production, the Hinsberg test can discriminate between primary, secondary, and tertiary amines. An amine and benzene sulfonyl chloride react in the Hinsberg test. Because tertiary amines can not produce stable sulfonamides, if a product occurs, the amine is either a primary or secondary amine.
