They were a nomadic tribe that occupied a vast area, from the Pir Panjal mountain range through the Hindukush to Ladakh in the Himalayan Mountains. The third-largest ethnic group in Jammu and Kashmir comprises Gujjars and Bakarwals. They are the most popular scheduled tribes in the state.
