The human heart is called myogenic heart because its normal activities are regulated intrinsically by specialised muscles (nodal tissue). The autonomic nervous system can regulate the cardiac function. Sympathetic neural signals can increase the rate of heartbeat, the strength of ventricular contraction and thereby the cardiac output. Parasympathetic neural signals decrease the rate of heartbeat, speed of conduction of action potential and thereby the cardiac output.
