The idea of Nationalism developed through the movement to revive Indian folklore.

Until the nineteenth century, Indian nationalists started to record Indian folk songs that were performed in different regions of India. They traveled to various places in order to collect folk songs.  Such songs represented a realistic portrait of traditional Indian culture that was lost due to outside influences. It was necessary to sustain folk tradition.
