Detailed Solution

The imperial countries took multiple steps to commercialise agriculture in their colonies. For example, the British government built webs of irrigation canals to transform the semi-desert wasteland of West Punjab into fertile agricultural land. Some areas were irrigated by the new canals built by the British in the 19th century to make the land fertile and more suitable for growing wheat and rice. A maximum number of peasants settled around that land, called "canal colonies". As a result, Punjab is known to have experienced an agricultural revolution, during which subsistence farming was replaced by the commercial production of massive amounts of wheat, sugar, and cotton.
