The Imperial Forest Research Institute was set up at Dehradun in 1906. This institute trained the forest personnel in the science of conservation. The system taught in this institute was scientific forestry. Scientific Forestry propounded for felling of trees and planting new trees of similar kinds. This system of planting trees is known as the Plantation. On the plantation, the trees were planted in a straight line. The forest officials in this system analyzed the forest area and estimated the forest cover. They also made working plans for forest management. They were the ones who planned how much forest areas were to be cut and replanted.
