Detailed Solution

The India desert region is characterised by low rainfall. The Great Indian Desert lies in the western part of India, majorly in the state of Rajasthan. The desert is spread to the nearby states of Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Pakistan. The Thar Desert is a hot tropical desert characterized by a hot climate and scarce annual rainfall of below 150 mm. The vegetation here is mainly thorny bushes and scrubs and the region is covered with dunes. The only prominent river in this region is Luni. The Rann of Kutch and the Aravallis are the southern and eastern boundaries of the desert with the Pakistan branch of the river Indus to the west. Agriculture is practiced in this area though success rates are very low. The Indira Gandhi Canal is the main source of irrigation for India’s desert region.
