The Indian Forest Research Institute was set up in 1905.
Dietrich Brandis helped write the Indian Forest Act of 1865 and established the Indian Forest Service in 1864. In Dehradun, the Imperial Forest Research Institute was founded in 1906. Scientific forestry was the name of the system they were teaching here. Natural forests with a wide variety of tree species were felled in scientific forestry. They were replaced by a single kind of tree arranged in rows, referred to as a plantation. Forest managers conducted surveys, calculated the area covered by various tree species, and created management plans. However, many ecologists now believe that this system is entirely unscientific.
