The Indian industries expanded during the First World War. This is because British factories were busy meeting wartime demands. Imports from Manchester declined, and Indian mills were suddenly faced with a massive domestic market to supply. They were also expected to provide war supplies like gun sacks, uniform cloth, tents, leather boots, saddles, and other items. Even though the old factories were operating in multiple shifts, there was a high demand for new factories to be built. Industrial output increased as more workers were hired and working hours were extended. British industries were forced to focus on producing and supplying war supplies. As a result, they ceased exporting British goods and clothing to colonial markets like India.
