Political party the Indian National Congress has been around since 1885. It was established long before India gained its independence, and it was the first party to govern India after the country gained its independence. When 72 representatives from throughout the nation gathered in Bombay in December 1885, the Indian National Congress was formally constituted. Early leaders from Bombay and Calcutta included Dadabhai Naoroji, Pherozeshah Mehta, Badruddin Tyabji, W.C. Bonnerji, Surendranath Banerji, Romesh Chandra Dutt, and S. Subramania Iyer. The younger nationalists were led by Naoroji, a merchant and publicist who settled in London and served briefly in the British Parliament. A.O. Hume played a key role in the formation of the party when he served as its first general secretary.
