Detailed Solution

The Indian Railway network runs on multiple gauge operations, out of which broad gauge has the maximum total track in kilometres.
Broad gauge covers a stretch of 63,950 km throughout the length and breadth of India’s railway network, which is the maximum compared to the kilometres covered by other gauge operations. Wide gauge and extensive line are different names for broad gauge. In these railway gauges, the separation between the two tracks is 1676 mm (5 ft 6 in). Any gauge wider than the standard gauge, which is 1,435 mm (4 feet 812 inches), can legitimately be referred to as a broad gauge. A comprehensive gauge line from Bore Bunder (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus) to Thane was constructed as the nation's first railway in 1853. Ports also use broad gauge railroads for cranes and other equipment. They are even better than thinner gauges due to their increased stability.
