The Indigo Commission was set up by the British government in March 1860. This Commission was set up to look into the movement led by Bengal's indigo peasants, or raiyats. They refused to grow indigo in their fields. This Commission was set up to examine the reasons for refusing to grow indigo. The Commission found that indigo planters were unfair to cultivators by not paying enough and forcing them to grow indigo.
