The Nuremberg International War Tribunal was established in Germany after World War II to punish Nazi war criminals for crimes against peace and humanity. Nazi war criminals faced trial at Nuremberg before an international military tribunal for crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes against peace. Germany's activities during the war, particularly those that became known as Crimes Against Humanity, aroused widespread censure and raised significant moral and ethical issues. Nevertheless, only eleven Nazi leaders were convicted to death at the Nuremberg Trials. Many others were given life sentences. Even while the Nazis were punished, it fell far short of the ferocity and scope of their atrocities. In contrast to how they had been after the First World War, the Allies did not want to be as severe in defeating Germany.
