Iron ore is the backbone of industrial development. India has abundant coffers of good-quality iron ore. Nearly the entire production of iron ore (97%) occurred in Odisha, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand in 2018-19, and the rest was 3% in other states. Bellary-Chitradurga-Chikmagalur-Tumkur is one of Karnataka's major iron belts with large iron ore reserves. Located in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, the Kudremukh deposits are known to be the largest in the world, and these mines are a 100 per cent export unit. The ore is transported through a channel through a harborage near Mangalore in the form of slurry.
