Detailed Solution

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, called the ‘Amritsar massacre, took place on April 13, 1919. A large, peaceful crowd had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab, to protest the arrest of Indian pro-independence leaders- Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr Satya Pal. That day was Baisakhi, a harvest festival celebrated in Punjab and other regions of north India. Men, women, and kids were all there in the gathering. The demonstration was nonviolent. General Reginald Dyer, who had snuck into the scene and arrived during the assembly with the intent of teaching the crowd a lesson, gave the order for his forces to begin firing on the crowd. Thousands were killed in the shooting.
