Detailed Solution

The jute producers of Bengal were affected by the economic crisis.
By the nineteenth century, colonial Indian trade was immediately impacted by the depression. Peasants and farmers were hit worse than city dwellers. Despite substantial drops in crop prices, the colonial authority refused to cut income demands. Peasants who produced for the global market were hit the hardest. Bengal's jute producers grew raw jute, which was processed in factories and exported as gunny bags. However, as gunny exports fell, the price of raw jute fell by more than 60%. Peasants who borrowed in the hope of better times or increased output in the hope of higher incomes were met with progressively lower prices and slid deeper into poverty.
