Detailed Solution

The Kalang families were equally divided into two kingdoms. The Kalangs of Java were skilled woodcutters and roving farmers. Without their knowledge, harvesting teak and building the emperors' palaces would have been challenging. When the Mataram kingdom was partitioned in 1755, the 6000 Kalang families were split evenly between the two kingdoms. When the Dutch took over the forests, they sought to make Kalangs work for them. However, the Kalangs reneged on their surrender and attacked the Dutch fort at Joana. Around 1890, Surontiko Samin of Randublatung village, a teak forest hamlet, began contesting the state's control of forests. His sons-in-law and more than 3000 households assisted him.
