The Kalangs were a community of Java who was skilled forest cutters and shifting cultivators.
In Java, there was a community known as the Kalangs, known for their phenomenal skills in forest cutting and shifting cultivation. They were treated as prized possessions and even equally divided when the Mataram kingdom of Java split between the two kingdoms in 1755. It was difficult to harvest teak without the expertise required to build palaces. When, in the 18th century, the Dutch colonial power started gaining control of the forest areas, they tried to coerce the Kalangs to work under them. The Kalanga refused to bow and resisted by attacking a Dutch fort at Joana. But their uprising was eventually stamped out.
