Dedicated to Shiva, the Kandariya Mahadeva temple was constructed in 999 by the king Dhangadeva of the Chandela dynasty. One of the most ornate Hindu temples, Kandariya Mahadeva is the largest and renowned for its Nagara-style architecture. The temple was designed so that an ornamented gateway led to an entrance and the main hall (maha mandapa), where dances were performed. In the main shrine (garbhagriha) the image of the chief deity was kept. The place for ritual worship where only the king, his immediate family, and priests gathered was Garbhagriha. Commoners were not allowed entry into the Khajuraho complex that contained royal temples. Carved sculptures were used to decorate the temples.
