Khilafat Committee was formed in 1919. During the first World War, Turkey was defeated and the terms of the Treaty of Sevres were a great insult to Muslims. It agitated the Muslims in India and announced the Khilafat movement. Its founding members were the Ali brothers – Shaukat Ali and Muhammed Ali. Khilafat Movement’s main goal was to express their protest against the unjust behaviour of the British in Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. Mahatma Gandhi, who always wished to bring Hindus and Muslims together, took this opportunity and supported the Khilafat Movement.
