The Khilafat issue was associated with the removal of the leader of the Islamic world called the Caliph. The first world war ended with the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, which led to the reduction of the Caliph. Caliph was the spiritual head of the Islamic World to whom all Muslims paid their allegiance. The news of removal raised Muslim objections around the world. In India, a Khilafat committee was formed in Bombay in March 1919. This committee was headed by the Ali Brothers, Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali, with the cooperation of Gandhiji. This led to the launch of a Khilafat movement.
