The Khilafat movement was launched during the first world war. The protest supported the Sultan of Turkey, the spiritual leader of Muslims in India. The entire day of October 17, 1919, was designated as "Khilafat Day''. Thus, Muslims in India started the Khilafat movement during the first world war to convince the British authorities to revoke the caliphate. The leaders of this movement supported Gandhi's non-cooperation movement and joined forces to protest the British. But unfortunately, Gandhiji insisted on calling off the entire campaign on February 12, 1922, as word of the Chauri Chaura event spread.
